Known Background: Jesse Daniels was the first-born son to Herb and Charlene Daniels. Jesse felt betrayed when, at age three, his brother Joshua was born. Herb was a professional motorbike racer and was away from home a lot, but he loved his boys and, during the summers, he'd take them with on the road and taught them everything he knew about motorcycle riding and repair. When the boys were 10 and 13, Charlene Daniels died. Herb now had the boys with him on the racing circuit year round. The boys liked the nomadic experience, living about two steps up from carnival people. But the two boys were very competitive - or more accurately, Josh was an overachiever, and Jesse wanted to be better so he could lord it over his little brother. When a Japanese mechanic on the circuit offered to teach the boys karate, they accepted and excelled. And their father taught them the protective, intimidating power of a big gun and how to use it.
When Jesse was old enough, he became a racer himself, but eventually fell in with a crowd - primarily Italian - who liked the fact that he was good enough for people to bet heavily on him, but wasn't above throwing a race. However, family could be more persuasive than "The Family".
Joshua took to motorcycle racing when he was old enough, even as their father retired. This renewed the rivalry between the brothers, and eventually led to interfering with Jesse's "work" with the mafia, as he would refuse to let Joshua win when he could help it. But eventually Josh became the favorite. The mob tried to convince Josh to follow in his brother's footsteps - kidnapping Herb as insurance - figuring it was an offer he couldn't refuse.
Instead, Joshua used his talents to become the Cyclist, attempting to rescue his father and bring the mob's plans to a halt. During a confrontation between the brothers, Jesse accidentally killed his father. He went to prison, while Joshua continued being the Cyclist, went to New Jersey, and became a Crusader.
Cyclist eventually missed life on the road, so he became an honorary member and returned to the circuit. Meanwhile, Jesse became consumed with guilt in prison, and realized how Joshua helped make him what he was.... a damn good racer, mechanic, skilled fighter and father killer.
Jesse snapped, torn between loving and hating his brother. Joshua, for his part, was trying to get his brother paroled. He told his brother about being in the Crusaders, being in love with la Chatte Noire and how he was trying to get enough money to buy an engagement ring. But before Jesse got out, or Josh could propose, Cyclist was killed (along with Westener, the false Hero, and Music Man) in battle with Havok.
When Jesse did get out of prison, he was going through his brother's personal effects. He found an incomplete letter apologizing to "Sylvie" (who Jesse figured out was la Chatte Noire) about a fight dated the day before he died. When Jesse found out that la Chatte had missed the Havok case, he seethed. But the dichotomy was now removed. He had found a way to deal with his conflicting feelings for Josh. He loved Josh so he'd hate the woman who left him to die. He hated Josh, so he'd hate the woman his brother loved.
Jesse became Dark Cyclist. He managed to steal Cyclist's motorcycle from the Crusader Junkyard and had it refitted so it could transform into a battle suit by Doctor Gadget and works occasionally with the so-called Champions of Injustice.
Watch out la Chatte, Dark Cyclist is coming.
